Kirksville, Mo., August 4, 2018 — Approximately 1,200 underserved adults and children received more than $815,000 worth of free dental care this weekend, thanks to the Missouri Dental Association (MDA) and MDA Foundation’s Missouri Mission of Mercy (MOMOM) charity dental clinic in Kirksville, Mo.
More than 800 volunteers, including dental health professionals and community volunteers, spent Friday and Saturday providing care, including:
- 974 cleanings
- 800 fillings
- 1,729 extractions
The MOMOM clinic provides access to dental care for individuals who might not otherwise receive these services. In addition, dental professionals provide all patients with oral health education to help facilitate improved oral health after the event.
“In 2011, the inaugural Missouri Mission of Mercy was held in Springfield. Since then clinics have been held in Cape Girardeau, St. Louis, Columbia, Independence and Joplin,” said Dr. Tisha Kice-Briggs, event co-chair. “We were glad to have our first clinic in northeastern Missouri to address the significant oral health needs in this region. Kirksville and neighboring communities rose to the occasion. Volunteers and sponsors gave time, talent and resources to help meet a substantial need.”
Long lines of people waiting for dental care formed the day before the event. It’s a visual representation that many people are unable to access the dental care they need in Missouri.
“The past few days have been a gift from the dental community to our neighbors in need,” said Vicki Wilbers, MDA executive director. “We know that we can do more when we collectively focus our talents and resources. In our seventh year, we surpassed 10,000 patients and $6 million in donated care. It’s been rewarding to see this effort pay off – demonstrated by the smiles of our patients and volunteers.”
