Volunteer Descriptions

Please review the following descriptions of available volunteer roles at the Missouri Mission of Mercy Charitable Dental Clinic. Then, when you register to volunteer, in the “Volunteer Team Selection”, please select from the eight categories provided the volunteer role that most closely represents where you would like to volunteer based on where you feel your skills will be most useful.

Dentist

Dentists with a Missouri (or out of state*) dental license in good standing are needed to work in the following areas: dental triage, local anesthetics, oral surgery, restorative, endodontics, lab, pediatrics, pharmacy and patient exit. *If Missouri is not the state of issuance of your License of Registration (for dentists or dental hygienists) you MUST complete the Request to Provide Temporary Gratuitous Services Form which is then approved by the Missouri Dental Board to be in compliance with Missouri law and to participate. Select from the options under Category 1 when registering.

Dental Student

Due to the clinic pace and objectives, MOMOM is not a great learning environment for dental students to hone their treatment skills. However, dental students provide great energy and enthusiasm for the profession and are needed to help make the clinic a success by performing functions other than providing direct care. A liaison will be assigned to direct your roles at the clinic.  Dental students with the appropriate credentials and supervision may be needed to work in the following areas: local anesthetics, oral surgery, restorative, endodontics, lab, pediatrics, pharmacy and patient exit.

Dental students may provide treatment only if a faculty member has made pre-arrangements with MOMOM on the student's behalf and that faculty member is present and monitoring the student, and if there are open chairs without licensed providers waiting. This is pretty rare. It is more likely students will be asked to perform functions other than providing direct care, including assisting a dentist on the clinic floor. Select Category 4 when registering.

Dental Hygienist

Registered dental hygienists with a Missouri (or out of state*) dental license in good standing are needed to work in the following areas: hygiene, dental triage, sterilization, anesthesia and radiology. *If Missouri is not the state of issuance of your License of Registration, you MUST complete the Request to Provide Temporary Gratuitous Services Form which is then approved by the Missouri Dental Board to be in compliance with Missouri law and to participate.
