Due to the clinic pace and objectives, MOMOM is not a great learning environment for dental students to hone their treatment skills. However, dental students provide great energy and enthusiasm for the profession and are needed to help make the clinic a success by performing functions other than providing direct care. A liaison will be assigned to direct your roles at the clinic. Dental students with the appropriate credentials and supervision may be needed to work in the following areas: local anesthetics, oral surgery, restorative, endodontics, lab, pediatrics, pharmacy and patient exit.
Dental students may provide treatment only if a faculty member has made pre-arrangements with MOMOM on the student's behalf and that faculty member is present and monitoring the student, and if there are open chairs without licensed providers waiting. This is pretty rare. It is more likely students will be asked to perform functions other than providing direct care, including assisting a dentist on the clinic floor.
