2018 Health Insurance Changes Coming

Individual health insurance options for 2018 are narrowing. The majority of Missouri counties will have ONE carrier offering coverage. Here’s what we know at this time:

Anthem BCBS is dropping 17 counties in Missouri, primarily in the Springfield and St. Louis metro areas and surrounding counties, along with Boone County. Anthem will continue to offer plans, in 68 Missouri counties.

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Kansas City (Blue KC) is leaving the individual market and will cancel all existing ACA policies on December 31. Grandfathered and Grandmothered (transitional) plans will renew and remain active for 2018.

Coventry is leaving the individual market and will cancel all existing individual policies on December 31.

Humana also is leaving the individual market and will cancel all existing individual ACA policies on December 31.

Centene, a Celtic company, will enter the Missouri market for 2018 and will cover the counties affected by the exit of Coventry, Blue KC, Humana and Anthem.
As an alternative solution, many dental professionals are again forming small group health insurance policies for their office staff. The small group market is unchanged and offers dozens of plan options with each carrier. Small group plans can be formed anytime throughout the year.

  • Open enrollment on the individual market runs from November 1–December 15.
  • Open enrollment for Medicare senior products runs from October 15–December 7.
