The Healthy Athletes Program: Special Smiles
The Healthy Athletes program is an initiative developed by Special Olympics Incorporated with a mission of improving the overall health of our athletes through various health screenings. This is a wonderful program that offers our athletes the opportunity to improve their health in an environment that is focused on the needs of individuals with intellectual disabilities. Thanks to the friendship of Missouri health professionals, the following screenings have been offered to SOMO athletes free of charge.
Dentists and hygienists provide one-on-one instruction on proper tooth brushing techniques,an oral health screening usingtongueblades and flashlights (no treatment is given) and information on the value of nutrition in maintaining good oral health.
Special Smiles 2015 Event - Volunteers Needed!
The Special Smiles dental screenings are used as a means to
increase awareness of the state of the athletes' oral health. Join us Saturday, May 30 at the John Q. Hammons Student Center on the campus of Missouri State University in Springfield.
Note that the event has moved to Springfield after three years in Columbia. There is only one shift (12-4pm), and we need at least ten dentists and/or hygienists to conduct screenings and at least 15 other volunteers for the registration desk, brushing demonstrations (on puppets), handing out goody bags and assisting the dentist/hygienist with the screenings.
If your office is interested, please complete the Online Registration Form by May 15, 2015. For questions contact Paul Roberts or call 573-634-3436.
