"It's not a question of if, it's a question of when." That was the main mantra of Dr. Glenn Farrar during his seminar on "Disaster Planning for Your Practice" which he gave today as an offering for members of the Greater Springfield Dental Society. I wanted to make sure I heard what he had to say after watching our Joplin crew walk through this past year. Worldwide the number of natural disasters each year has tripled since 1980. You don't have to live in tornado alley or a flood zone to be at risk. Age old risks like fire and lightening are now joined by hazardous materials, terrorism, and cyber space as threats to your office.
Dr. Farrar's credentials and experience are deep. His message was simple. Have a plan and test it annually. There are all varieties of different plans you need from emergency evacuation to continuity of operation. Many templates can be found on the internet but he has developed dental practice specific plans (His wife is a dentist).
I'm glad I made time to join a good crowd in Springfield. The message is sobering and the work is difficult but the peace of mind from readiness is hard to overlook. I hope this stirs your own thinking about the practice you worked so hard to develop and maintain.
