Healthy Kids Day Partnership Launched in Joplin

Last Saturday morning I was at the The Joplin Family Y, the launch site for a new partnership event between the Y and the MDA. A similar event was happening at the Callaway County Y in Fulton.
Through some funding from DHSS, the MDA is partnering with select Y's in each of our 8 components to bring some oral education to the Y's Healthy Kids Day program. Kids are already coming to the event to learn about physical and nutrition as they gear up for summer programs so why not seize the opportunity to teach them the connection between good oral health and good overall health.
Liz Schuerich from the Joplin Y was a great host and provided our booth space. A fantastic team of staff from the Joplin Dental Arts (Drs. Renger and Kivett) volunteered to man the booth and the MDA provided the YMIT materials, disclosing tab activity, and other support materials including a free electric toothbrush to be given away via drawing to one lucky boy and one lucky girl.
I snapped photos and soaked in the scene as parents and kids stop by the booth and engaged the staff in good questions about oral. And everybody walked away with a goody bag that included toothbrush, paste, and a flosser. There was lots of fun energy in the gym. It was a natural fit for a community event.
More events are planned for April 28th in St Joseph, Kansas City, Springfield, Kirksville, and St Louis. And Sikeston will host an event on
September 8th. Check with me for more details.
