Passing the Baton in St Louis

Posted by Paul on 7/25/2012 3:38:00 PM

Send offs are always bittersweet. You celebrate a new chapter in a person's life but you also realize how much you will miss them and their contribution to organized dentistry. The MDA and, more specifically, the GSLDS will miss Ellen Kessler as she steps down after 20 years of service. She'sprovided great leadership the last eight years as the executive director to the St Louis component. While I've only been at this gig for about 14 months, Ellen was quick to make me feel comfortable and set a great example of how the component and state levels can work together for everyone's mutual benefit. I always felt quite welcomed at every GSLDS event. Join me in thanking Ellen for her dedication and wishing her the best in the future!
At the Hi-Tech night two weeks ago, I had the pleasure of meeting Meg Shannon who is filling Ellen's role as executive director. Meg is most recently from Florida but is a St Louis native so she's glad to be back home. Her qualifications are outstanding and I look forward to working with her. I know you will welcome her as you have chance to meet her.
Life never stands still so I wanted to take a moment to say "Farewell" to Ellen and "Welcome" to Meg. Good luck to both!

Checking In - Joplin Style

Posted by Paul on 7/13/2012 3:46:00 PM

Earlier in the week I had the chance to be on the receiving end of a check presentation. Today I had the immense pleasure of presenting a check. If you recall from earlier blog posts, it was decided that the proceeds from the Joplin Tornado Anniversary event in June would be donated to the local Joplin Community Clinic which for 20 years has effectively served the short term healthcare needs of the uninsured in the Joplin area. The clinic does not receive any state, federal, or insurance funding to provide services.
Dr. Robert Renger, local MDA member, both volunteers in the clinic (along with many others in the community) and serves on the board of directors. He joined me, Dr. Charles McGinty, and several others including a few media outlets to make the presentation to Barbie Bilton, Executive Director of the Clinic. It was quite nice moment when we surprised Barbie with a $3,000 donation. She and her staff and other board members were all very appreciative.
Afterward we did a few interviews and shared cake and punch. If you've followed the tornado saga at all this past year, you know how nice it was to come full circle and give back to the community. It makes me proud to represent the MDA! Celebrate with me and the clinic for working together to improve dental health in the community. You can check out some media stories in the links below.

Hi-Tech Adventures

Posted by Paul on 7/12/2012 4:32:00 PM

I made a quick trip to St Louis to support the GSLDS's 2nd Annual Hi-Tech Night at the Sheraton in Westport. The crowd was even bigger than last year and I had a number of great conversations with local members. My, what a difference a year makes. Last year I was just starting in my role and everyone seemed so new - especially me! Now, I feel like a see an old friend wherever I turn.
The members (and manyguests, or as I like tocall them "soon to be members")weren't there to see me. A host of vendors had their latest gadgets and tools on display and the intimate setting made it easy to have deeper discussions. Plus good food and happy bartenders enhance any gathering of dentists.
All through the night, prizes were given away by event organizer, Dr. Vince Rapini, to lucky winners. They included an iPad and two intraoral cameras. In the photos you can see Dr. Rapini and GLSDS staffer, Susan Prosperi, fishing out another winner. I was not to be outdone so the MDA gave away a $50 Brookstone gift card. You can see me with the winner, Dr. Shuka Moshiri.
Congrats to all on a great event for dentistry!

More Walmart Fun

Posted by Paul on 7/11/2012 10:59:00 AM

The check presentation event was fun for several reasons. First, how often do you get a chance to speak to Walmart shoppers during rush hour? I tried to seize the moment but I fear the audience was just noticing that Koolaid was .70 cents cheaper. A neat part of the event came when several Walmart Associates led a cheer. This enthusiasm is part of every Walmart meeting. Finally, we all had a good laugh that the refreshment table had a lovely arrangementof sugary cupcakes at a dental event. I noticed that almost everyone including myself was thrilled to partake. No one seem to miss the veggie tray! All in all it was great hospitality and fun!

Checking In - MOMOM Style

Posted by Paul on 7/11/2012 10:28:00 AM

Yesterday was a big day for the MDA Foundation and MOMOM. I had the privilege of representing the MDAF at an in store press conference at the Cape Girardeau Walmart. The big occasion was to receive a $45,000 grant from the Walmart Foundation to support MOMOM 2013 to be held at the Show Me Center in Cape Girardeau, May 3-4, 2013. This is a huge boost to the MOMOMfundraising effortsand a great moment for the community. As such, we had several guests join us (and the many 5 pm Walmart shoppers). I'll introduce you to some of our guests.
The first photo with the big check includes Drs. Pat and Jan Ruopp, MOMOM chair for 2013, with many of their local board members. The next photo is Gary Elders, local store manager and emcee for the event, listening to Dr. Jan Ruopp explain MOMOM to the crowd while recruiting volunteers. She's got a lot of energy and makes a perfect chairperson.
We were honored to have three local MO State Representatives join us as well. All three have been very supportive of MDA issues and are thrilled to see MOMOM come to SE Missouri. In the left photo, in the foreground, is Rep. Donna Lichetenegger (R-157) from Jackson. Behind her in the yellow shirt is Rep. Wayne Wallingford (R-158) from Cape Girardeau. In the right photo, wearing red, is Rep. Ellen Brandom (R-160) from Sikeston. The final photo with the big check(left to right) is Gary Elders, Rep. Ellen Brandom, yours truly, Dr. Jan Ruopp, Rep. Donna Lichetenegger, and Rep. Wayne Wallingford.
On behalf of the MDA Foundation, I want to thank the Walmart Foundation for their generous support of MOMOM and their commitment to help their local communities. I want to thank Laurna Godwin from Vector Communications and local store manager Gary Elders for arranging such a nicemoment for the check presentation. And thanks again to all the state representatives, local board members, and other supporters who joined us for this milestone moment.
