Signs of Life

Posted by Paul on 1/23/2014 8:33:00 AM

Last night at the Columbia study club I witnessed something that stirred my heart.I sawa vocal and agitated group of member dentists! Fora moment, I thought they may break out the lanterns and hand pieces and storm the castle.
There's no need to name names or get into specifics but several people spoke up during Patrick's legislative report with concerns about insurance changes, the ACA, and related issues. The discussion was lively and engaging but respectful as well. Members, rightfully so, wanted to know what the MDA was doing to help them. The answer is plenty but that's not the point.
The point is your association needs this level of engagement if it is to thrive. Disconnected and dispassionate members don't create change. It takes PAC donations, letter writing, meeting attendance, phone calls, etc so we can understand what members want and mobilize resources accordingly.
A wise older member gave an impassioned speechchampioningthis enthusiasm that has been lacking in recent years. I chirped in and added that if you are unhappy or concerned with the MDA or your profession, don't walk away. That only makes matters worse. Instead, go recruit your non-member colleagues and tell them we need all available hands and voices if we wish to protect and advance the profession you love.
So raise your hand or voice (even your lantern and hand piece). We want to hear from you. The MDA Board and staff are working diligently to represent you and they welcome all the input and help they can get.

New Dentist Reception at Winter Session

Posted by Paul on 1/20/2014 5:23:00 PM

When you're special like the New Dentists, you get your own private reception after the big Winter Session Happy Hour. The special event was held at chic Room 38, a cozy little bar downtown. The MDA sponsored reception wasco-hosted by Dr Ron Wilkerson and Dr Emily Mattingly. More than 20 attendees piled into the plush red velvet walled party room for some appetizers and cocktails. Other than a brief moment of introductions, the agenda was simply to connect with other new dentists around the state and swap notes on building careers, raising families, and learning the ropes of organized dentistry.
The event was scheduled to keep momentum from the Connect4Success conference last June and build toward the national ADA ND conference in KC this July. The plan seems to be working. We may do it again at the UMKC Alumni conference so keep your ears open.
I was the designated driverand I was enjoying the company so much, I forgot to take pictures. Below is the only one I snapped. It's Drs David and Emily Mattingly from Chillicothewith fellow ND, Dr Maice Scott from Columbia.

Winter Session 2014

Posted by moda on 1/20/2014 5:00:00 PM

Winter Session, MDA's annual CE conference was last weekend and once again it was a strong event. More than 250 attendees braved cold weather to enjoy diverse class offerings, a sold out exhibit hall, and those annual personal encounters and reunionsthat make the work fun. Inside the warm, newly renovated hotel (thanks SEC!), there was opportunity to see the latest gadgets, enjoy happy hour, learn about upcoming events (MOMOM!) and buy a 50/50 raffle ticket to support the MDA Foundation. This year's winner, Dr Matt Theriac, graciously donated his winnings back. Thank you! Enjoy some photos from the event and make plans to attend next year!

MDA Legislative Reception 2014

Posted by Paul on 1/15/2014 5:46:00 PM

A strong turnout of @ 70 guests made their way through the G2 Gallery in Jefferson City tonight to meet a variety of MDA members, trustees, and staff at our annual MDA Legislative Reception. This is a great way at the beginning of session to meet our elected officials and share with them our thanks for their support and express our concerns for issues affecting the profession.
Unfortunately a MOMOM conflict kept me from attending the event but I heard good things from those in attendance and my inventory tells me that our guests love leaving withcomplimentary paste and brush!. This is a valuable exchange as we seek to actively represent the MDA in all matters legislative. Thanks to all who made it a priority to attend. Let's have another strong turnout for MDA Legislative Day on February 26, 2014. Make sure to contact Patrick Baker at patrick@modental.org to RSVP.
I do have a few photos. We have Dr Rob Tait with Senator David Pearce. We have the Springfield group of Drs Kessler, Hume, and Vance (L to R) with Senator Jay Wasson and wife. We have Vicki Wilbers with Senator Scott T Rupp. He was one of two MDA Legislative Award winners (Representative Chris Molendorp was the other). Thanks again to all for coming.

New Year - New Focus

Posted by Paul on 1/3/2014 8:07:00 AM

Welcome to 2014! Everyone loves a fresh start. Don't believe me? Just try to get a parking spot at your local gym.Ha!Due to someshifting in job duties, mygym this yearwill be the MDA's foundations. My new title is Foundation and Outreach Director. I will focus on working with the MDA and Well Being Foundation boards to grow both groups and execute a variety of projects - primarily MOMOM. It feels like a good fit and I'm excited. Plus I will keep outreach on my plate as I enjoy traveling to be at member events and to work with a wide range of MDA related audiences. Hopefully that keeps my blog filled with photos and updates.
Why not make 2014 a banner year for yourself when it comes to organized dentistry? Just one small level of engagement from everyone enhances the vitality of your association. No need to skyrocket toward being an ADA delegate. Take a baby step first. You can recommit to a local study club. Perhaps you engage with your component and serve on a committee or help with an event. This may be the year you and your staff attend MOMOM. You can come represent your profession at Legislative Day (2/26). We will show you around the Capitol. Or you can earmark www.modental.org. and see all that's going on and jump in when you are ready. The bottom line is although I believe your dues deliver exceptional value and benefit, we all know the maxim that you get out of something what you put into it. This year put a little of yourself into your association and see what you get out. It's likely to be very rewarding to you and beneficial to others.
Happy New Year!
